Lesson Overview

Part of evolution is being able to classify different organisms based on their characteristics. Biologists and scientists use Dichotomous keys to identify organisms.

Objectives

Students will be able to successfully read a Dichotomous Key and use it to identify different "organisms".

Opening

"When do we use classification? --> How about in your dressor?--> Where else? --> So would you say it is important that we classify things? It is especially important for scientists. (4 min)


Engagement

(15 min)
After the Powerpoint students will work in pairs to try and complete the worksheet printed from the website from above. "I want each group to to use the Dichotomous key to identify each of the 20 creatures pictured on the paper. Next to the creature mark the process you went through to find the species you found." (15-20 min)

Closing

Hand in your work. If any time remains we can start going over one or 2 of the questions, and begin homework.
